Tadashi Kishi ~ Manzanar Survivor, U.S. WWII Soldier, Congressional Gold Medal Recipient
Library - Adult
 Location: Civic Center Library
Meet a true American hero, hear his remarkable story. American-born Tadashi Kishi was a UCLA physics major when his world fell apart. Although born a U.S. citizen, the government secretly reclassified his 1A status to 4C--enemy alien. Without due process, he was forced to remain a prisoner at Manzanar Internment Camp for one and a half years.

While imprisoned, he took 24 units at UC Extension School in order to teach physics at Manzanar High School. After a year of teaching, he applied to teach conversational Japanese at the University of Minnesota as a way to gain freedom from internment. He was released from Manzanar to teach conversational Japanese to U.S. WWII reservists.

The U.S. Army drafted him and he trained at the Presidio of Monterey, California.  He served as a soldier and interpreter in Japan under General Macarthur. After his discharge, Kishi finished his studies at UC Berkeley, to earn a B.S. in physics and an M.A. in math.  He worked at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory from 1951 to 1953 and at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab from 1953 to 1989 as a programmer, supervisor, researcher, and scientific application division leader.

In 2012, Tadashi Kishi received the Congressional Gold Medal, one of the highest civilian awards in the US, for his service during WWII.
