Commercialization Center
In 2010, the State of California designated an initial group of six innovation hubs (iHubs) in the State. The City of Livermore, Sandia National Laboratories and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory plaed an important role in obtaining the iHub designation, which for our region is known as i-GATE, for Innovation for Green Advanced Transportation Excellence. As such, NEST (National Energy Systems Technology) is one of two corporations (the other is i-GATE Development Corporation) formed to implement the programs of the iHub. The City of Livermore is the coordinator for i-GATE iHub.
Fostering Technologies
NEST fosters technology-based economic development for positive social impact largely in the Tri-Valley region of California, but also beyond this footprint with our partner cities and regions. We support new science and technology companies to develop green transportation and clean energy technologies. These technologies include the development of efficient automotive engines, electric vehicles/batteries, biofuels, hdyrogen fuel cells, renewable-energy generation (solar, wind, biomass), energy efficiency technolgies such as solid-state lighting, and access to high-performance computing resources for modeling and predictive simulation.
The development of these technologies as facilitated by NEST occurs through programs and services such as entrepreneurial mentoring and educational services; technolgoy transfer assistance; collaboration opportunities; academic alliances; networking opportunities; specialized operational infrastructure; and a technology incubator facility for the development of green businesses. Learn more about our programs and services.
Economic Impact
Stated simply, NEST promotes a green technology business cluster to create new jobs and accelerate the introduction of beneficial green energy technologies to the public. NEST works closely with U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories, as well as other research and academic institutions, to leverage intellectual property and technical assistance with the goal of bringing renewable energy technologies to market and supporting new economic activity in the region and the state.
