Minimum Qualifications for the LPFD


High school graduation, GED, or equivalent.


Possession of appropriate, valid California Driver’s License and, when required, a valid Medical Examiner’s Card must be maintained.

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s license with Firefighter Endorsement is required within 18 months of employment.

Possession of a Firefighter I Certification or completion of an approved Firefighter I Academy.

Candidates must possess a valid CPAT card at time of appointment.


Current National Registry EMT or California equivalent and current CPR certification required at time of appointment.  

Valid National Registry EMT-P Certification or California Paramedic License Alameda County accreditation is required by completion of LPFD Academy.
Experience: Paramedics are required to have 6 months of full time field experience as a licensed Paramedic.

Fire Science programs exist in many Community Colleges, throughout the area including Las Positas, Los Medanos, Solano, Modesto and others.  The requirements are similar in each.    Although not often required for entry level hiring, the increased experience and education provided by a Degree or Certification program will make a candidate more desirable.   If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact:
