Carbon Monoxide Detectors - New Requirements

Effective January 1, 2013 all existing multi-family dwellings with an attached garage or fossil fuel burning source such as a fireplace, heater, or appliance must have approved carbon monoxide devices installed. $0$0The requirement was effective July 1, 2011 for all existing single family dwellings with an attached garage or fossil fuel burning source such as a fireplace, heater, or appliance.$0$0Placement requirements:$0$0$0$0Devices must be installed outside each sleeping area in the home in the immediate vicinity of the sleeping area.  It is recommended that a device be placed in each sleeping room for maximum protection.$0$0At least one device is required on each level of the building, including basements, whether or not there is a sleeping area on the level.$0$0For hotels and motels, a device must be placed on the ceiling of sleeping units with permanently installed fuel-burning appliances, such as heaters or stoves and ovens. $0$0Contact the Fire Prevention Bureau for more information at 925-454-2361.
