Jazz in July 2013

Free Jazz at the Livermore Public Library

June 18, 2013

July means Jazz at the Livermore Public Library!  The sound of jazz will be featured during the month of July 2013, as the Livermore Public Library presents their annual Jazz in July series of free events around this lively genre of music.  All events will take place at the Livermore Public Library Civic Center, 1188 S. Livermore Avenue.
The Suzanna Smith Quartet kicks off the Jazz in July series on Sunday, July 7 at 2pm.  Suzanna is not only an emerging talent on the Bay Area jazz scene, but is also a former Livermore resident and graduate of Livermore High School returning home to perform. Known for her golden tone, innate sense of swing, and irresistible charm, Suzanna brings classic jazz standards to life. But she has original compositions and new lyrics penned to traditional instrumental jazz songs too, and they are the heart of her most intriguing performances.
On Sunday, July 14 at 2pm, the series welcomes back the Oakland Jazz Choir, a talented group of dedicated singers from diverse backgrounds that have joined voices to take part in a new genre of vocal jazz.  The use of 15 skilled, dynamic singers in a jazz choral setting provides a unique opportunity to deliver and innovative sound – exquisite harmonies and rhythms distinct to jazz, expressed by the power and finesse of so many human voices.  The group sings traditional and contemporary jazz with exciting original arrangements.  Paying homage to the cultural roots of jazz, OJC’s repertoire also includes blues, gospel, Latin and Brazilian music.
The series continues on Sunday, July 21 at 2pm with some electric jazz by Charged Particles – plugged-in jazz with a spark!  The most exciting and creative music being made today crosses stylistic boundaries and blends multiple traditions to create vital new sounds.  Charged Particles features three of the country's virtuosos doing just that in the electric jazz arena.  Murray Low is a keyboard wizard with dazzling Latin-jazz technique and imaginative improvisational skills.  Jason Muscat is an inventive and sophisticated electric bassist.  Along with fiery drummer Jon Krosnick, these players are making some of the most electrifying jazz in the country today. The trio's repertoire blends jazz styles with elements from Latin music, classical music, funk, and more, with a distinctly acoustic sensibility, despite the fact that the members play both electric and acoustic instruments.
FivePlay, the sister group of the world-renowned DIVA Jazz Orchestra, will conclude the Jazz in July series on Sunday, July 28 at 2pm. FivePlay is rooted in the jazz tradition and is fueled and inspired by the members' collective, creative vision to swing through the 21st Century. The quintet's repertoire is comprised of innovative arrangements of classic and contemporary standards, as well as original music composed and arranged by the band members - Sherrie Maricle, drums; Tomoko Ohno, piano; Noriko Ueda, bass; Jami Dauber, trumpet; and Janelle Reichman, tenor saxophone and clarinet.
The Friends of the Livermore Library have generously underwritten this program as part of the Jazz in July series.
