One of the most common things we hear is “I could never do your job, I love animals too much”. We too love animals, so much so that we choose to work in a field where we believe we can make a difference. There are times when our job is very challenging and tests our emotions. But, simply helping an animal receive emergency assistance or reuniting someone with his or her lost pet makes it all worthwhile. Tick Bites! You usually won't feel a tick bite. The area around the bite may be a little red. If you think you've been bitten by a tick, and you don’t know what kind it is, call your doctor. Some ticks carry disease (Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever) and can pass it on to people. What You Should Do Check for ticks after you've been hiking in the woods. Pay special attention to your head (including your scalp), back, neck, armpits, and groin area. If you ever find a tick on you, remove it by using tweezers. Grab the tick as close as he can to your skin, and pull the tick off in one motion. Don't cover the tick with petroleum jelly, rubbing alcohol, or fingernail polish, since these don't help the tick come out and can make it harder to remove. If any of the tick parts are left behind, they should be removed using a sterile needle. Once the tick is removed and you’ve talked to your doctor flush it down the toilet. Don't crush it in your hands. What a Doctor Will Do Doctors don't need to treat most tick bites. But if the tick was carrying Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever and passed it on, the illnesses can be treated with antibiotics. If these diseases are treated early on, it's rare for there to be any lasting changes to a person's health. If you aren’t familiar with the symptoms of these diseases, call your doctor. | | How to Avoid Getting Bitten Ticks hang out in bushes, where they can remain close to the ground in order to jump on people or animals that pass by. If you are hiking in the woods, wear long sleeves and long pants, and tuck your pants into your socks. Wearing an insect repellent also might help. Apply one that contains less than 10% DEET. Dogs also pick up ticks in their coats, so bathe your dog with a tick shampoo and give your dog a tick collar or treat your dog with an anti-flea anti-tick medication. Our goal is to not have any unwanted animals. We need you to help us. You can do this by spaying and neutering your pets, providing your pet with a proper collar and identification and by providing a home for your pet where it will not roam the streets.
