Did you know that 50 to 80 percent of all pollutants entering the San Francisco Bay are discharged from storm drain systems?
For a cleaner environment, only clean
rainwater down the drain!
Pollutants such as automotive fluids, solvents, pesticides, paint, litter, and sediment that are illegally dumped or washed down the storm drains during a storm event flow untreated directly into our creeks, and ultimately to the Bay. Strict local, state and federal regulations mandate that only rainwater, with a few exceptions (such as fire fighting water) is permitted to enter the storm drain system.
Regulations further state that all non-storm water discharges to the storm drain must be effectively eliminated, and all practicable measures must be taken to prevent pollutants from entering the storm drain system. There are many ways residents can help to reduce the pollutants reaching the storm drain system. Simple things like not pouring used motor oil down the storm drain but taking it to a recycler instead, washing paintbrushes in the sink instead of the gutter, and taking your car to a carwash instead of washing it in your driveway.
