ENJOY SUMMER AT LIVERMORE PUBLIC LIBRARY

Summer is just around the corner and everyone is invited to celebrate with the Livermore Public Library! This year, the Library is challenging the community to read 500,000 minutes collectively. It’s a big reading goal, but our community can do it! This reading campaign is part of the Livermore Public Library’s 2021 Summer Reading Program, “Reading Colors Your World”.

Summer reading is for everyone at the Livermore Public Library. The Library’s 2021 Summer Reading Program has four levels, all free of charge. Pre-readers, independent readers, teens, and adults register to play online or via an app (a paper board will be available for those who prefer to play that way). Once registered, participants track the number of minutes they read and participate in activities to earn digital badges. Logging minutes online automatically updates the community’s overall reading goal. Prizes will be awarded in all programs, with the goal of reading, learning something new, and having fun! Participants may pre-register now and begin playing on June 1st. All programs run through August 12th.

Prizes will be earned in the same manner across all reading games. Prize 1 is earned after reading for three hours, Prize 2 is earned after reading for a total of 9 hours, and the grand prize is earned after completing a total of 8 badges (any combination of 8 reading and activity badges).

Young pre-readers, including babies, can play with the help of a reader in their home. Caregivers and children read together to earn sidewalk chalk and a tub of Play-Doh along the way. Those who complete their reading challenge will earn a free book and a special reading ribbon award. Research has shown that reading to a child for as little as fifteen minutes every day has a huge impact on their early brain development. According to the American Library Association, reading together develops vocabulary and comprehension, nurtures a love for reading, and motivates children to learn to read.

Independent readers in grades K - 6 will earn prizes that may include a color scratch bookmark and a science or art kit. Independent readers who reach the final reading goal will also receive a medal and their choice of a free book. The Livermore Public Library is committed to supporting youth summer learning through the Summer Reading Program. A study by Dominican University found that “children who don’t read during the summer can lose up to two months of learning by the time they return to school in the fall. Children who participate in Summer Reading programs and read a minimum of six books over the summer score higher in reading and math when they return to school.”

Teens entering grades 6th through 12th are invited to join in the summer reading fun, too. Each participant who earns the first prize will receive a colored pencil set, while those that earn the second prize will be entered into a drawing for a book of their choice ($15 value). Teens that complete 8 badges will earn a coloring book, while teens that complete the entire set of badges will garner an entry into a raffle for a $50 shopping opportunity.

“Color Your World” with the Adult Summer Reading Program! Individuals aged 18 and over are invited to participate in a fun-filled summer reading program. This year’s game encourages reading, exploration, and learning. Participants who complete 8 or more badges by August 12th will earn entry into a grand prize drawing for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to local restaurants and businesses, as well as other prizes along the way.

Complementing the Summer Reading Programs will be a host of activities and entertainment for all ages, including performers, special events, crafts, and much more. This year's lineup includes a Reading Roundup featuring Livermore Public Library staff members on Zoom, a colorful virtual show by Encore Players community theatre group, a virtual jazz concert by the Dave Rocha Jazz Group, and an in-person Botany Walk along the Arroyo Bike Trail! Summer classes and events will be digital or distanced. All events are free; however, some may require registration to participate. Summer Reading Programs are supported by the Friends of the Livermore Public Library. Download the Summer Reading events booklet or call 925-373-5505 for further details.
